President's Day Weekend

We spent the weekend with the Spulers.  Lisa picked me up from work, which is along the way, and we headed up up I-70 to Winter Park where we would stay until Monday.

The kids took lessons at Sol Vista on Saturday while we (John and Lisa) headed to Devil's Thumb for some nordic skiing.  It was a bit cold and breezy but the trails were in great shape.  We skied for about 2-hours trying to figure out pole planting techniques used on various terrain - V1, V2, V2 alternate.  We are definitely improving but by no means great.  Although we do have our V2 alternate down.

Afterward we grabbed some lunch and a coffee to go and headed back to Sol Vista to watch Sam and JJ finish their lessons.

That afternoon we lounged a bit watching the Vancouver Winter Olympics.  The next morning we lounged more before heading out to ski.

On Sunday we all headed to Winter Park ski resort for some Alpine action.  No lessons today - JJ was very happy with that as he, for whatever reason, doesn't like lessons.

Scott and I would take the girls to Winter Park, up the Zephr lift, and ski most of the day on the back side of the mountain.  Mary and Lisa took the boys to the Galloping Goose lift - a beginner run - over at Mary Jane.

The day started off well enough.  It was busy as expected so we waited in line for about 20 minutes before grabbing a chair.  The first two runs were fun: I'm leading the girls in giant s-turns with Scott following them.  We do this again the next run.  Big smiles from everyone.

Two runs in Sam's hands get cold - not unusual - her hands seem to always get cold.  We were at the top of the Eskimo Express and while trying to put hand warms in her gloves the zipper breaks - ugghhh - tears flow, Daddy growing impatient.  Luckily there was a shop at the top of the restaurant.  20 minutes later with new gloves, glove liners, new heaters, bag of Dorritos (or "Fire Chips" as JJ likes to call them) happiness is re-found.  The new glove setup proves to be bomb-proof as the day progresses.

We head back out with Ella (Scott and Nora stay in the lodge for snack) and proceed to hit some of the bumps on the right hand side of Cranmer.  The girls are giggling with excitement as they weave in between the big bumps and occasionally through the trees on the edge of the run.  A few wrecks and more smiles.

Sam and Ella on the lift

We meet back up with Scott and Nora and did a few more runs down the bumps.  We get to the top of the lift and Sam tells me her feet are cold and she's ready to head back.  We part ways with Scott and the girls and head back to catch the red bus back home.

Lisa and Mary report that the boys had a great time at the Goose.
